2013 Mediator Survey results

05 November 2013
The results of the 2013 CD/ACDS mediator survey were presented at the mediator meeting held in Johannesburg on the 28th October. Amongst the findings were the following:
  • there has been an increase in the number of commercial mediations conducted over the past year

  • most mediations take place in professional services in Gauteng

  • most mediations take a long day or slightly longer, and most mediators charge between R5 000 and R8 000 per case

  • settlement rates are still over 80%

  • the greatest obstacle to mediation is the apparent lack of awareness and understanding of mediation

  • reputation and accreditation are the main considerations when parties chose mediators

  • mediators are mostly appointed by lawyers

Many respondents to the survey generously supplied their demographic data. Howard Boetcher won the draw from those who did. Howard wins a copy of our book "Commercial Mediation - a User's Guide". Congratulations Howard!
