The recent CEDR survey results provide an interesting read on the trends in mediation in the UK over the past year. There were an estimated 9500 mediations, about 75% of which were settled on the day of the mediation. The cases had a total value of approximately £9b and saved the economy £2.4b. Of particular interest to new mediators in South Africa will be the results relating to the attitudes of civil and commercial mediators to a range of issues concerning their personal background, mediation practice and experience, professional standards and regulation, and priorities for the field over the coming years.
