John Brand recently attended a meeting of arbitration experts at the South African Law Reform Commission to consider the Draft International Arbitration and Domestic Arbitration Bills. The purpose of the Bills is to bring South African Arbitration Law into line with the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law Model Arbitration Law. It is hoped that the Bills will be enacted during 2014 and, if so, the acts will be a major step forward for South African alternative dispute resolution. They will also enable South Africa to become a major hub for cross border arbitration in Africa.
