Mahamed Rajah


 

Professional background and experience:

Mahamed’s qualifications include a BA Hons, an MA and DPLR. Mahamed is a Centre for Effective Dispute Resolution (CEDR, UK) accredited commercial mediator, coach, and assessor, and has received training at the Advisory Conciliation and Arbitration Service (ACAS) in the UK. With a rich academic background, Mahamed served as an associate professor at the UNISA Graduate School of Business Leadership, lecturing in labour law, negotiation and conflict management, industrial relations, and dispute resolution (1980 – 2016).  Mahamed brings vast expertise as a bargaining forum chairperson, facilitator, mediator, arbitrator, and trainer. With extensive experience, he has provided training in Botswana, Zimbabwe, Ethiopia, Namibia, and Eritrea and notably has served as a consultant trainer for the International Labour Organisation (ILO) Swiss project, specializing in training the Department of Labour’s staff. 

Additionally, he holds certification in workplace mediation from the Mediation Training Institute International (MTI) and has acted as a judge at the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) mediation competition held in Paris. Mahamed has served as an editor of the South African Journal of Labour Relations where he has published several articles and research reports.

Mediation experience and style: 

Mahamed has more than 30 years of experience in labour relations and dispute resolution as an academic and practitioner. The majority of the mediations that Mahamed has worked on involve labour disputes, He also mediates commercial, community and workplace disputes. His preferred mediation style is facilitative. He is, however, comfortable to adapt to evaluative, narrative, and transformative mediation styles, depending on the dispute, and the parties involved. 

Facilitation experience and style: 

With more than three decades of experience as a facilitator, Mahamed frequently facilitates bargaining forum meetings. Generally, his process adapts to different settings, but typically he refers to a hybrid facilitation process involving mediation, Relationship by Objectives (RBO) and with the use of Participlan.

Chairing enquiries and investigations experience: 

Mahamed is a part-time senior commissioner at the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA) and also conducts dispute resolution processes for the Transnet Bargaining Council.  He has worked for more than three decades in the labour and employment arena and has extensive experience as an independent chairperson of internal disciplinary hearings.
