Buang Jones

Professional background and experience:

Buang, a Director at Buang Jones Attorneys Inc, a Johannesburg-based law firm, is also the founder and director of Interpose Consulting, an innovative consultancy established in 2011 with an original approach to addressing complex problems. An accomplished human rights defender, Buang has previously worked for Legal Aid South Africa and the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC). He has experience in human rights, complaints management, dispute resolution, and investigations. He was the Chairperson of high-profile public hearings and inquiries at the South African Human Rights Commission.

Buang holds a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree and a Master of Laws (LLM) degree in corporate law from the University of South Africa. Additionally, he has a certificate in the Management Development Programme from the University of Pretoria’s Gordon Institute of Business Science (GIBS).

As an accredited mediator and an admitted attorney of the High Court of South Africa, Buang possesses over 13 years of post-admission experience. He specialises in human rights law and is well-versed in corporate governance, business strategy, lobbying, equality, diversity and inclusion, transformation, public policy, community engagement, regulatory laws and change management.

Mediation experience and style:

Given the explicit statutory mandate of the SAHRC to resolve complaints through alternative dispute resolution mechanisms, Buang has mediated numerous disputes and complaints since 2011. In his role as the Head of the SAHRC in Gauteng and the Free State, he mediated and intervened in several notable human rights disputes, socio-economic rights issues, business-related human rights concerns, and discrimination-related matters. He had to ensure that any settlement of a dispute reflected recognition of human rights and the need to protect those rights. His approach considers not only positive outcomes and remedies for the parties but also broader systemic outcomes to protect human rights. Buang’s mediation style is facilitative, relaxed, and transformative.

Chairing enquiries and investigations experience:

Buang chaired public hearings and inquiries and led investigations during his SAHRC tenure. Notably, he chaired the UNISA Inquiry probing allegations of workplace harassment, discrimination, sexism, bullying, and victimisation.

Facilitation experience and style:

Buang has facilitated many engagements at the SAHRC and multi-party processes in municipal related disputes and eviction matters.
