Philip Ginsburg SC

Professional background and experience:

Philip Ginsburg is a practising Senior Advocate of the High Court of South Africa and a member of the Johannesburg Bar. Philip has extensive intellectual property practice particularly in the field of trademark, copyright, patents and designs. His practise area includes banking and currency, exchange control, income tax, administrative law and general commercial litigation and mediation.

Philip is a member of the Society of Advocates in Johannesburg and previously a member of the governing body of the Society of Advocates in Pretoria where he served as Vice-Chairman. He is a member of the WIPO Arbitration and Mediation Centre's List of Neutrals. Philip is also a member of the Arbitration Foundation of South Africa and listed on their general commercial panel, intellectual property panel, appellate panel and mediation panel. The Arbitration Foundation of South Africa provides alternative dispute resolution services with links to similar organisations throughout the world.

Philip was appointed to act as Judge of the North Gauteng High Court for varying periods during 1992, 1996, 2001, 2003, 2004 and 2011. Philip is an author on the subject of Intellectual Property for the Annual Survey of South African Law, published by the School of Law of the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg.

Mediation experience and style:

Philip became accredited as a CEDR mediator in January 2008 and has taken part in numerous commercial mediation processes as a mediator and as adviser to the parties in mediations. The parties involved in such proceedings have included both South African and overseas corporations, as well as South African individuals. Philip also has experience in court litigation and arbitration where he has conducted numerous arbitrations as an arbitrator and appeared as counsel on behalf of the parties.
